Our Events

Proud to have co-organised the “Hawker for a Day” event with Dignity Kitchen Hong Kong 厨尊, a Hong Kong social enterprise with a mission to restore dignity to the differently-abled and the disadvantaged through skills training, job placement and integration.

Participants from our Hong Kong NextGen initiative including our clients, experienced role-playing as differently-abled food “hawkers” born with physical challenges. A humbling experience for many, it was equally inspiring to learn about how the lives of the disadvantaged were changed after being a part of Dignity Kitchen.

On 29 June 2022 the London NextGen and LGBTQ+ societies hosted a joint summer party on the rooftop of the Queen of Hoxton. It was fantastic to see such a great turnout from clients and Mayer Brown alike and we were lucky to have a warm, Summer’s evening with a great BBQ buffet on offer, personalised cocktails, “NextGin” and for Pride, as well as garden games and a photobooth. The event also marked 50 years of Pride although, as Tom Hunter acknowledged in his speech on the evening, there is still a long way to go. We would like to thank everyone who attended and we look forward to seeing you all again at future events.

On May 19, the Paris NextGen Committee hosted its third event at the legendary Roxo les Bains, a venue designed to capture the spirit of the myriad of artists who made Les Bains a legendary restaurant, nightclub and concert venue in the 1980s and 1990s.

More than 150 clients and friends of the Firm from private equity funds, banks and companies (including Bridgepoint, Edmond de Rothschild, Eurazeo, Natixis, Société Générale, Total, Airbus and ICC) had the opportunity to connect with Mayer Brown lawyers, including colleagues from Washington DC (counsel Morgan Bailey and associate Eliel Flores) and London (apprentice solicitor Christopher Howes).

This event perfectly illustrated what NextGen—Mayer Brown’s inter-professional network for rising stars—is all about, including its international dimension and its “distinctively global” reputation. The Paris NextGen Committee, which includes counsels Marine Ollive, Rémy Bonnaud and William Ahern and associate Constance Bouchet, is grateful for the continued support of the office and managing partner Jean-Philippe Lambert.

Last Thursday, May 5, 2022, NextGen was launched for the first time in the U.S. by the Washington D.C. office. The event took place at the D.C. office’s newly renovated 12th Floor Rooftop Terrace and featured arrival drinks, followed by a keynote speaker Kate Kerr. Kate is the Founder of Propelled Leadership, and we were very excited to hear her insights on the role of asking questions in leadership development. We welcomed Mayer Brown colleagues from multiple U.S. and global offices, and guests from across the D.C. professional landscape with margaritas and our signature “NextGin” cocktail. We shared Mexican-themed food for Cinco de Mayo and had a very exciting baseball ticket giveaway to attend Nationals v. Astros in the new Mayer Brown box suite at Nationals Park!

The event was a great success and we received extremely positive feedback!

The entire D.C. office is grateful for the tremendous support we have had from Jon Van Gorp, Liz Stern and the partners from the D.C. office and abroad.

We can’t wait for our second NextGen event!

Following NextGen’s inaugural launch in London in September 2018, and after seeing great success in the Paris, Germany and Hong Kong offices, NextGen has now launched in North America with Washington DC being the first office to join the NextGen global network.

On December 2, 2021, associates and counsel from the DC office attended a hybrid (virtual & in person) internal launch event, where committee members Christy Freer, Clark Bakewell, Stephen Cohen, Eliel Flores, Michael Leibner, Amber Thomson, and Edna Hurtado introduced the initiative. The internal launch featured the debut of the very first NextGen cocktail – the NextGin! The external launch will take place in the Spring 2022 which we are positive will be a great success and will show the continued expansion of the NextGen global network.

After more than six months of planning amid challenging pandemic restrictions, the NextGen Hong Kong chapter was officially launched in November 2021 with more than 100 young professionals in attendance. After close to two years without in-person events, the launch party was a smashing success with entertainment provided by Hong Kong comedian, Vivek Mahbubani.

Hong Kong counsel, associates and trainees shined in the spotlight that evening, with our Asia Chair – Duncan Abate – who did the welcome honours. NextGen Hong Kong co-chairs Evelyn Lok and Jason Leung lead a committee that includes lawyers Cherie Leung, Cheryl Law, Michelle Yee, Xin Fang, Stephanie Lam, Joe Choy; and registered foreign lawyer Hsuen Chan.
